Finally knitting and zippers are getting friends

For many years I considered zippers and knitting like beings from different planets. And in most cases I still think those two shouldn't be combined. But since I have softened on this issue: Zippers ARE very handy. But what a hassle to insert them. My, my. You need large amounts of "Fingerspitzengefühl" and it often seems that you can only tackle it using magic to not end end up with a wavy zipper, a  too tight zipper, or a zipper where right and left side aren't matching. Once I was battling with an unwilling project I took to the "Readers Digest Knitters Handbook" better known as "The Montse Stanley" for advice, and the instructions started with a simple sentence that seemed to come right out of my heart, and made me laugh at the same time. It said: Try to avoid zippers.

But: Finally there is hope! Somebody came up with a genious approach. With this simple method it even becomes possible to knit in a zipper. Watch this Knit in you zipper tutorial! Personally - I can't wait to try!

Weefbreinaalden

In tegendeel.

Knitting is one thing. Weave-Knit Needles are an intriguing variation. They were invented in 1979 in cooperation with the knitting needle manufacturer Addi. So, what is so special about these Weave-knit needles? The interesting thing is that they are hollow, so that you can thread extra strands through the needles and miraculously finds its way and runs through your knitting in a weaving fashion. Once threaded correctly it all works by itself. This way you can work simultaneously with up to three different colours or materials, while knitting any pattern you might fancy.

There is one thing to keep in mind: due to the weaving effect the knitting will not be as elastic as we are used to. It is rather material than knitting. The needles are available in one size only. And because they are hollow, they are also rather thick. But that doesn't mean that you can only work with thick yarn. Quite the contrary. If you take the yarn that would officially go with the needlesize, you would end up with a very sturdy piece of textile - which can be very welcome, thinking of bagmaking, and the like. So if you wish for a thicker or just thinner result: go experimenting with thin and thick yarn.

Just as we do with weaving, it is necessary to watch the selfedges. In some cases it is advisable to make a pattern, in order to check the tightness.

Wanna try for yourself? At the Magistix Webshop you can order a set of Weave Knit Needles.

New Project: Bauhaus Fair Isle Sweater

Last week I started another project: The Bauhaus Fair Isle Sweater. I had this pattern on my wish list for quite a while. As it turns out: my DH likes it to!

... and this is what it's supposed to look like. Apart from the neckline. DH preferes a round one. Fine by me.

Bloss den Halsausschnitt will mein Mann anders. Prima, dann strick ich ihn doch rund.

... ja, en zo moet het worden. Alleen wil mijn man liever een ronde hals. Prima.

Knit and Felt-Slippers

Very Easy Knit and Felt slippers size 33

material: 2 skeins + a few meters of a 3rd skein of Eskimo colour nr. 18
needles: dpn's 6 mm, blunt needle

start with measuring child's feet. In this case, footlength is: 20 cm

- cast on 32 stitches
- knit 6 rounds stockinette stitch
- heel (choose a technique you like)
- go on knitting until the slipper has length of foot + 3 cm
- in my case that was 17 cm after the heel
- toe: *k5, k2tog; rp from * around. K 5 rnds. Next rnd *k4, k2tog; rep from*. K 4 rnds. Continue like this, working 1 stich and 1 rnd less, every time, until there are only a
few stitches left.
-cut yarn, draw tail through remaining stitches, pull tightly and secure

Knit the 2nd slipper just the same, and then: felting! Put the slippers in the washing machine together with an old towel and some washing-powder. With my washing machine the 40 degrees programme felts just perfectly. Are the slippers still to big after the first time? Do another one on 40 degrees. Pull them in shape immediately after taking them out of the washing-machine -as long as they are still wet you have influence!
